Wow – the days are blurring and the amount of awesome things we’re seeing in a day is amazing. We left Vegas after our morning buffet and headed off for the Hoover dam. Drove though the security check (of course they wanted to see in the back of the truck, so I had to open it up and pull out all the bins) but after that we were though and the dam was awesome! The bypass bridge I’ve watched them build on the discovery channel for the last few years is nearing completion, there were only 2 road sections left to complete. There was still a ton of construction going on. The dam itself was amazing (is that a god-dam? – beavis and butthead references were made) and the scale and awesome art deco architecture. The water level in Lake Mead really is rather low (you can tell by the marks on the canyon walls) but it was still a great sight.
After the dam we left for Route 66 – which was better than an interstate but not all that exciting compared to the roads we’ve driven. There’s a lot of history on that road, and they are really trying to make it an attraction but it would probably be more fun in a convertible (we saw a TON of mustang convertibles driving it) or motorcycle.
We then drove down to Sedona along the Arizona 89A highway and it was great, Sedona itself is amazing, reminds me a little of Whistler – a resort town separated by a few kilometers between each section. We found out that you could camp for free just outside of city limits, so we drove out and found a sweet spot before heading back to town for dinner at Picazzos – a delicious pizza/salad place.
