Day 25 – Yellowstone National Park

Ok, day got off to a bit of a weird start as I put in the South Yellowstone entrance into the GPS and it said it was going to take 5 hours or so – I knew it was close, so I was a little confused. I reprogrammed it to take me though Grand Teton National park and it then said it would only be an hour and a bit, that was more like it. Took off out of Jackson into Grand Teton only to find that the road would open in two days! Not that it mattered the south entrance to Yellowstone wasn’t set to open for a few weeks. Turned around and headed off to the west entrance instead. Starting snowing lightly on the way there, but the roads were dry and I didn’t even have to use my wipers at all do driving was a breeze. The small town just outside of the park entrance is a little weird, it’s obviously slow season but the town had a strange feel. Went into Yellowstone only to find that almost all of the park was closed, save for the road to Old Faithful and back – mostly due to the snowstorm I was currently driving though, and even then the park had only re-opened this morning.

The park itself is amazing, each turn in the road gave way to more wildlife, interesting geologic features and snowy vistas. I managed to get shots of a number of birds, Bison, Elk and a female Moose. I missed shots (but still saw) of an Eagle, a Coyote and more. Old Faithful was interesting and did erupt just after the predicted time but the grey sky made it almost impossible to get a good picture. I enjoyed the Black Sands Basin area as there were some cool colours and bubbling hotsprings.

Didn’t quite know where I was going to stay, but thanks to McDonalds free Wifi (it’s killing me – I’m eating there too much) I pricelined a room in Bozeman at the Windgate. Haven’t figured out what to do tomorrow yet! Spokane on saturday!
