Day 3 – Nehalem park to Oregon dunes
Today was awesome! The 101 highway is a really amazing drive. Everyone has always told me the Oregon coast was a great drive but you really don’t believe it until you’ve done it. Lots of coastal pictures today but they will have to wait until tomorrow to be uploaded as the internet connection here in the campsite is really spotty. Saw some great viewpoints, lighthouses and more.
Drove for the first time on the beach today – tons of fun but scary at the same time, I really didn’t want to get stuck. It is nice that they let you drive on the beach in the non-busy months here. We’re staying in the Oregon Dunes national park tonight. Not quite as nice as last night but it’s empty – we’re one of only 3 or 4 groups in our whole campsite. The frogs are really loud already, could be an interesting night. Garth believes there is something crawling around in the bushes too – we saw a beaver earlier but we don’t know what this is.
Stats:
Kilometers driven: 1120km
Beavers seen: 1
Day 2 – Portland
Ok, so the morning was spent buying supplies. I picked up a North face tent, a sleeping mattress and a few other goodies. We also did a BIG food shop at Walmart – holy crap cheese is cheap down here! And delicious! This Tillamook sharp cheddar is awesome. On our way to the coast we took a quick detour up to see Saddle mountain (I am easily distracted by side roads) and it was pretty cool, didn’t get to hike to the top though. After that we drove out to Cannon beach on the Oregon coast had a look around. This area is awesome! It’s like Tofino but less hippy-ish, I like it alot.
By then it was getting later so we drove down to Nehalem State park and grabbed a campsite. We’re right next to the beach and it’s lovely. Garth cooked up a wonderful dinner of steaks, asparagus and baked potatoes.
Tomorrow we continue down the coast!
