Days 5 and 6 – California Coastline

Days 5 and 6 – California Coastline

Day 5

Well today was the best day of driving I’ve ever done! We left Eureka and headed south on the 101, turned off for the “Avenue of the Giants” drive though some more Redwood forests, then headed off on Highway 1 in Leggett and began driving the best Highway highway I’ve ever driven. The road was windy, twisty, curvy and all sorts of goodness. Traffic was light and once we hit the coast it got even better. We had lunch in Fort Bragg and then kept going, knowing we had to be in San Francisco by evening. Even though the GPS kept trying to get us back on the 101, we stayed on Highway 1 (Shoreline Hwy) the whole time and it was totally worth it. Stopped and checked out a few parks and lighthouses but the star of the day was the drive. Lots of sharp hairpins, narrow roads and great views.

Highlights of the day included a shortcut that involved taking a left around a peacock and not being able to turn around because the road filled with cows. The next shortcut we took passed a lady riding a lawn mower down the street followed by someone on horseback.

Rolled into San Fran over the Golden Gate at sundown, perfect! Staying at the Holiday Inn in Fishermans Wharf, it’s pretty neat but the extra $44 to park is brutal. Ate at the In-and-out for the first time (not bad!) and went for a quick wander.

Day 6

Quick update today – wandered around San Francisco with Garth and did a little shopping in Union Square after riding the streetcar over there, it’s so oldschool! Garth picked up an iPad so that should be fun to have in the truck. We are both addicted to the Plants vs Zombies game already. Went for dinner at “The Pub” (how original) and enjoyed some delicious brisket. Haven’t decided where we’re headed tomorrow yet, possibly up to Lake Tahoe, or over to Yosemite, or if the weather really sucks to just head for Death Valley. We’ll see in the morning!
