Day 38
Day of driving! Did about 800km today, driving North and West! Went though Grande Prairie, Dawson Creek, Fort St. John, Fort Nelson and more. Things are definitely much farther apart now, it’s not like the trip so far, that’s for sure. But that’s good, I like changes in scenery and experience. Communities are getting smaller as well, gas stations are rarely paved now and everything is more rustic (maybe not the right word, everything is a little “rougher”). Drove until sunset (around 10pm) looking for a campsite, as I’m a little early on this trip most places are still closed. I camped by the road and a river but it was warmer up here than Montana, so no problems.
Day 39
More driving! But I threw in a little exploring as well, knew I didn’t have to be in Whitehorse until Thursday afternoon (tomorrow) so I took a little more time to drive around, stop and see things and set up camp earlier. I checked out Muncho lake (still frozen and cold-ish) and had a great warm swim at Liard Hotsprings – checked out some of the wildlife there as well. Zigged and zagged back and forth over the Yukon/BC border a bunch (this was my first time in the Yukon) and eventually found an awesome campsite on Lake Morley. It was weird because I stopped next to a rest area on Lake Morley in a little hidden side road and decided to camp there, but for some reason I didn’t set up anything. I sat there and wondered why I felt like I should keep driving, it was weird as it was a great camp site, right next to the lake, with a fire ring and everything. Either way, I hopped back into the truck and continued a little further. *Right* next to the BC/Yukon border I found a small road with a “Lake Morley recreation area” sign that was almost hidden – drove down that and found a fantastic user-maintained campground right on the edge of the lake. This was what I’d been looking for and I was glad it worked out. Had a great night camping and enjoyed a nice bottle of wine while the sun set. Tomorrow – Whitehorse!
