Days 50 – 53 – the road home!

Alright! It’s time to drive home, but the scenic way. Woke up and left Denali and headed north to Fairbanks. The drive was uneventful and I picked up some supplies and Taco Bell in Fairbanks around lunch time. Then it was time to drive though North Pole, AK and make my way back to Tok, which I had been a week before on my way to Anchorage. From Tok there is a road that heads north, to a second border crossing with the Yukon, as I got on the road I realized I was 2 hours from the border and that they closed at 8pm (it was 6pm). I started driving, with only a quick stop to go to the bathroom next to Chicken, AK but then realized that my clocks were still on Yukon time. I wasn’t sure if the border closed at 8pm or 9pm Yukon time so I kept pressing on. I made it just before 8pm Yukon time, but found out I did have an extra hour. This was definitely the most remote and lonely looking border crossing I’d ever seen, they even had the gas station “ding, ding” tubes set up. Getting back into Canada wasn’t a problem and then it was time for the Top of the World Highway! I had heard good things, but it was a real treat! This is a highway that winds along the top of a ridge for about 100km on the way to Dawson City, really cool stuff. There was some interesting weather coming my way and I avoided most of it but did end up with a bit of rain at one point. Took the Ferry into Dawson City, bought some expensive gas ($1.40 a litre) and ended up camping at Moose Creek.

The next day I kept on the road, and decided to take a lesser-known “highway” back to Watson Lake. The Robert Campbell highway skips Whitehorse and drives across the middle of the Yukon, with about 60% of the road being unpaved. It was a good drive, but I liked the southern route better for sure. I fueled up in Watson Lake again and then drove back into BC! I found a great campsite about 100km south of the BC border and had a good long sleep.

I woke up to bright sunshine coming in though the tent and headed off for Prince George! The road was relatively uneventful, it was pretty, but not like some of the other roads I’d been on lately. I’ve totally been spoiled on this trip. There were a lot of bears though, saw one (maybe two) grizzly bears and about 7 black bears. That brings the total bear count up to 8 grizzly bears and 13 black bears.

Tomorrow it’s time to get back to Whistler and Vancouver, what a trip it’s been.
